The Ministry of Agriculture on Wednesday signed a $26.7 million contract with Aubco construction to replace an old chimney at the Rose Hall estate in Berbice as the government pushes ahead with plans to reopen the estate.

An estimated 800 workers were sent home when the former APNU+AFC government closed the Rose Hall estate in December 2017. Aubco Construction will dismantle the existing chimney and install a new one in September.

Minister of Agriculture, Zulfikar Mustapha implored the contractor to deliver according to the contract and on time.

“This is a very important contract for us,” he stated.

“A number of activities are going on at Rose Hall estate and this is one of the most important part to get the factory in order,” he told the contractor.

He said he hopes the management team from GuySuCo will work with the contractor to satisfy the contract and complete it on time, “because a number of persons are still awaiting jobs.”

“We also have to increase our sugar production because now we are seeing GUySuCo is making a turn,” Mustapha stated.
