Melroy Moore, the 27-year-old man of Phoenix, Leguan Island who clubbed his 51-year-old uncle to death with a piece of wood on July 7, 2021 has been charged with murder.
Moore appeared via Skype at Leonora Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Esther Sam on Tuesday where the charge was read to him.
He was not required to enter a plea.
Moore was remanded to prison and the case stands adjourned until July 29, 2021 for report.
Moore was recorded beating his uncle, Aubrey Jonas called Badja to death.
According to a police report, the farmer’s 23-year-old niece witnessed Moore enter Jonas’ farm and picked some plantains. Subsequently, Jonas arrived from a backdam with a cutlass in hand and asked the nephew who gave him permission to pick the plantains.
After a period of verbal confrontation, police said that Jonas lashed Moore with a cutlass on his leg. This resulted in Moore going into his mother’s yard and arming himself with a piece of wood which he used to lash his uncle in his head multiple times. Moore then made good his escape on foot.
Meanwhile, Jonas was picked up by his niece and others and rushed to the Leguan Cottage Hospital at around 14:55 hrs. His niece, according to the police, videoed what transpired between him and Moore.
While being treated for his injuries, Jonas eventually succumbed about 16:00 hrs.
Later, at about 17:00 hrs, acting on information received, police officers went to an abandoned house in Phoenix, Leguan. There, Moore was contacted, told of the allegations and arrested.
