20-Y-0 ‘well-known’ character remanded to prison for snatching gold chains

A well-known character of the prison system, 20-year-old Shaquille Mentore was on Friday remanded to prison on two larceny charges following allegations that he snatched the gold chains of two women.

Mentore of Plaisance, East Coast Demerara, appeared before City Magistrate Leron Daly and pleaded not guilty to the two charges.  The first charge alleged that on July 3, 2021, at Stabroek Market, Georgetown, Mentore stole from Shenola Gittens one gold chain and a cellphone valued at $193,000.

The second charge alleged that Mentore on July 13, 2021, in Georgetown he stole from Tavia Bookie, one gold chain with a diamond pendant valued at $200,000.

Mentore was remanded to prison on the grounds that he has pending matters before the court.  The case is adjourned until August 13, 2021.

In 2019, Mentore was sentenced to 15 months imprisonment on a similar charge. This is his sixth time before the court and he was previously convicted four times for similar crimes.
