Police discover massive ganja farm in Berbice, armed men escape

Some 20,000 marijuana plants of varying lengths alongside a quantity of dry cannabis and seed, ammunition and other equipment were found at Cow Savannah, near the Canje river in Region Six (East Berbice- Corentyne) on Friday.

According to a police report, between 06:00 hrs to 14:01 hrs, police officers conducted an eradication exercise at the savannah. When the officers arrived at the savannah, they saw two men armed with firearms.

Those men fled into nearby bushes but when chased by the police officers, they opened fire. The police returned fire; no one was hurt and the men eventually disappeared.

Meanwhile, when the officers returned to the area, a marijuana field measuring about three and a half acres, with about 20,000 marijuana plants ranging from four to eight inches in height, were discovered.

Police also found two camps where two live 12-gauge cartridges, one Stihl chainsaw, one Stihl weeding machine, one Evinrude outboard engine, one water pump, a quantity of dry cannabis and seeds were found.

The camps and marijuana plants, dry cannabis and seeds were all destroyed while the other items were taken to Central Police Station, New Amsterdam.
