A security guard employed with Northwest Security Service shot his colleague on Wednesday night while on duty at the Ayan Chinese Supermarket at Plaisance, East Coast Demerara.

Police in a statement said a 26-year-old male security guard was on duty at the supermarket at around 19:20hrs, armed with one semi-automatic 12-gauge shotgun.

Sherwin Young, 32, went to the supermarket and was talking with his workmate. Although they both work at the same security company and live in Plaisance, Young was not on duty at the time.

Police said while talking, the suspect discharged a round from the shotgun which caused Young to receive injuries to both of his legs.

Shortly after, the suspect was trying to clear the firearm and another round was discharged but it did not hit Young.

Young was picked up by public-spirited citizens, who took him to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he is presently admitted a patient in a stable condition.
The suspect is in custody as an investigation is in progress.
