Tokyo Olympics: Edghill up against Yee of Fiji in opening game

Following the official opening ceremony on Friday (July 23), Guyanese table tennis player Chelsea Edghill will swing into action the following day at the Tokyo Olympic Games.

Edghill, the first Guyanese table tennis player to ever attend the Games, will shape up against Sally Yee of Fiji in her first round game at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gym in Japan.

Edghill, who was granted a spot at the Games through the tripartite system, which only has two spots worldwide for table tennis, one male and female, had been in training at the Indian Community Centre in California fine-tuning her game ahead of the global showpiece.

Before leaving for the training, the former Under-21 Caribbean Champion and 2018 National Sportswoman-of-the-Year had received support from the Guyana Olympic Association, ANSA McAL Trading, the Guyana Lottery Company and P&P Insurance Brokers and Consultants Limited.

Edghill is one of seven athletes from four disciplines representing Guyana at the upcoming Olympic Games. The others are boxer Keevin Allicock, athletes Aliyah Abrams, Jasmine Abrams and Emmanuel Archibald, and swimmers Andrew Fowler and Aleka Persaud.
