A University of Guyana student, 21-year-old Tyree Li-A-Ping of Hague, West Coast Demerara (WCD), is now in police custody after he lost control of the motorcar he was driving and crashed into two pedestrians on the De Willem Public Road, WCD, on Saturday.

Fifty-four-year-old Kenneth Smith of Ocean View, Uitvlugt, WCD, succumbed to injuries while receiving treatment at the Leonora Cottage Hospital. The other injured pedestrian, 43-year-old Rampaul Sursen, of Tuschen New Scheme, East Bank Essequibo, has been admitted to the West Demerara Regional Hospital with a fractured left ankle and injuries about his body.

According to a police report, the accident occurred at about 17:45h and also involved a motor pick-up being driven by Sahadeo Singh, 39, of Hydronie, East Bank Essequibo.

The police report further stated that Li-A-Ping first collided with the pick-up, and then crashed into a fence, finally colliding with Sursen and Smith, who were standing in a yard.

Police said Singh alleged that he was in a line of traffic proceeding east along the De Willem Public Road when he turned on his right traffic indicator and attempted to turn south into Harrykisson Street, when the accident occurred. Sursen and Smith were picked up in an unconscious state and taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital.

Police said breathalyzer tests were conducted on both drivers, but no alcohol was found in their systems.
