Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Charles Ramson Jr. on Thursday evening confirmed that the government has set aside $12 million to be distributed to over 40 groups for the country’s Emancipation Day activities.

The presentation will be done on Friday, the Minister told News Room during an interview.

Ramson Jr. said this is another tangible demonstration of the President Irfaan Ali-led PPP/C government’s commitment to being a government for all Guyanese, and achieving the ideals of the ‘One Guyana’ initiative, which is aimed at building a single Guyanese identity, and part of efforts to put an end to the division caused by race and politics.

The groups had written to the Ministry requesting support for their respective Emancipation Day observances.

Emancipation Day or Freedom Day is celebrated annually on August 1. This year commemorates the 183rd anniversary of the emancipation of enslaved Africans.
