An unemployed mother of three, who admitted to stealing cell phones to feed her children, was on Friday ordered to complete six months of community service for the crime.

Alicia Bernard, 28, appeared before City Magistrate Leron Daly and admitted that on July 25, at Cornhill Street, Georgetown, she stole two cell phones valued at $155,000 along with $2,000 cash – property of Ronette Johnson.

Bernard, who was unrepresented, pleaded with the Court for mercy as she told the Magistrate that the father of her children is currently behind bars for robbery and she is without a job.

Being unemployed, Bernard said that her children were hungry and she decided to steal the phones. She said she intended to sell the phones to get money.

Magistrate Daly ordered Bernard to complete six months of community service at the Brickdam Police Station one day per week or serve six months imprisonment.
