Patients missing following fire at Psychiatric Hospital

A total of seven persons who are patients at the Guyana Psychiatric Hospital at Fort Canje, New Amsterdam, Berbice are currently unaccounted for following a fire on Saturday night.

This fire comes exactly one month after a previous fire at the institution which left several patients injured and dozens more displaced. An investigation into that fire is still ongoing.

Police said just after 21:00 hours, nurse supervisor Waveney Felix was in her office when she observed smoke emanating from Chalet Four.

Felix told police that she observed the patients running out of Chalet Four and as a result she immediately informed the New Amsterdam Fire Service.

Shortly after the Fire Service arrived and extinguished the fire.

Several persons were questioned and out of the nineteen patients, only five were accounted for.

However, due to the quick response of the Joint Service and other Law Enforcement Agencies seven patients were recaptured.

UPDATE: Two other patients have been found and returned to the facility as at 10:00 hours. Five remain at large
