Man beaten, robbed of nearly $1M in jewellery

A 26-year-old Goed Fortuin, West Bank Demerara, man was beaten and robbed of $914,000 worth in jewellery on Sunday night. Police are on the hunt for two suspects who are known to the victim.

The victim was relieved of two gold chains valued $351,000; one silver chain with a pendant valued $88,000; a gold bracelet valued $127,000; two gold rings valued $198,000 and a wrist watch valued $150,000.

Police Headquarters reported that the victim was waiting on a taxi in front of his friend’s house at about 23:45h at Two Miles, Goed Fortuin, when the two suspects approached him and “they asked him why he was making trouble with somebody’s wife.”

As a result, the victim and suspects began arguing. One of the suspects then pulled out a metal object, dealt him several lashes about the body and relieved him of the jewellery. The suspects escaped on foot.

The victim’s friend came to his rescue after he raised an alarm. He was taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where he was treated and sent away.

Investigations are ongoing.
