Man killed in East Coast accident

A man, who remains unidentified, was killed on the Better Hope, East Coast Demerara road Monday night after he was struck by a motor car.

Police said motorcar PZZ 9593, owned and driven by Dharmendra Parmanand, 23, of 205 Thomas Street, Kitty, Georgetown was proceeding east on the northern driving lane. According to Police, the driver claimed that the pedestrian walked from north to south into the path of his motorcar.

The centre front portion collided with the pedestrian and he fell onto the road surface where he received injuries about his body.

He was picked up in an unconscious state and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital by the police where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police claimed Parmanand was speeding.

A breathalyzer test was conducted on Parmanand but no trace of alcohol was detected on his breath.

The driver is presently in custody assisting with investigations.
