    Three individuals, including two women, died after they were infected with SARS- CoV-2, the virus that causes the disease, COVID-19. With their deaths, Guyana’s COVID-19 death toll has increased to 573.

    According to a press release from the Ministry of Health, the latest fatalities are:

    • A 65-year-old man from Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica)
    • A 54-year-old woman from Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara)
    • A 47-year-old woman from Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice)

    The three individuals died on August 12 while receiving care at a medical facility. So far, 27 COVID-19 deaths have been recorded in August 2021.

    Meanwhile, 111 new infections were recorded over a 24-hour period, pushing the overall number of confirmed infections to 23,455.

    The new cases were recorded in Region One (three new cases), Region Two (25 cases), Region Three (four cases), Region Four (69 cases), Region Five (one case), Region Six (two cases), Region Seven (two cases), Region Nine (one case) and Region Ten (four cases).

    Sixteen patients are in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Infectious Diseases Hospital while 80 are in institutional isolation, 859 are in home isolation and six in institutional quarantine.

    Another 14 people who were previously infected have recovered; a total of 21,927 people have recovered.
