President Irfaan Ali Tuesday night said there are many decisions to be made in the interest of the people of Suriname and Guyana.
He was speaking shortly after greeting Surinamese President Chandrikapersad Santokhi, who arrived in Guyana Tuesday afternoon for an official four-day visit.
The two Heads-of-State, along with their wives, had conversation during an informal dinner with their delegations, comprising members of the two governments and private sectors.
“It was great welcoming President Santokhi…we have an elaborate agenda that covers several areas such as infrastructure, trade, agriculture and oil and gas collaboration,” Dr. Ali said on the sidelines of an informal dinner.
The two Heads-of-State will settle down on Wednesday for a day packed with closed door meetings and exchanges between government representatives and members of the private sector.
Already, Dr. Ali has said that he was happy with the initial meeting of the private sector delegations from Guyana and Suriname on Tuesday.
“There is a lot of energy and opportunities…as leaders we have to facilitate that and ensure there is the right policy mix for the private sector. The framework has been set for fruitful few days.
“There are many decisions to be made in the interest of both countries…we will work on collaborating for the economic and social upliftment of our people,” Dr. Ali added.
Following the plenary sessions and meetings set for Wednesday, there will be a state dinner hosted by Dr. Ali at State House, the official residence of the President.
On Thursday, President Santokhi and Dr. Ali will launch the Guyana/Suriname Business Council.
There will also be the signing of the terms and conditions for the Trade in Fresh Agricultural produce and an agreement on the establishment of services in the field of healthcare between Guyana and Suriname.
Later on Thursday the two Presidents will sit down for a joint press conference.
Santokhi will depart Guyana on Friday, August 20.
This Official visit follows the visit of Dr. Ali to the Republic of Suriname in November 2020, during which the two Presidents launched the Guyana-Suriname Strategic Dialogue and Cooperation Platform (SDCP).
The progress made will also be reviewed.
