COVID death toll nears 600 with three more deaths, 112 new infections

Three more persons who tested positive for COVID-19 died on August 20, taking the country’s death toll from the virus to 594.

The latest fatalities also take the death toll for this month to 47. The Ministry of Health in a statement reported that the three patients died while receiving medical care at an institution.

The latest fatalities are a 75-year-old woman and a 54-year-old man, both from Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara) and a 62-year-old man from Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica).

Meanwhile, 112 new infections were recorded from 1, 653 tests. This takes the total number of confirmed cases to date to 24, 336.

The new cases were recorded in the following region; Region Two (12 new cases), Region Three (15 new cases), Region Four (59 new cases), Region Five (three new cases), Region Six (21 new cases) and Region Ten (two new cases).

There are 16 patients in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit at the Infectious Diseases Hospital, 102 are in institutional isolation and 1, 260 are in home isolation.
To date, 22, 364 persons have recovered from the virus.
