A 57-year-old security guard is in police custody after he allegedly shot a customer, identified as Mohamed Fazil, during an argument about not wearing a face mask at the Golden World Chinese Supermarket at Parika, East Bank Essequibo.

Police Headquarters reported that the incident occurred on Tuesday at about 12:25hrs.

Fazil called Robbie, 57, of Parika, was not wearing a face mask before entering the supermarket and as a result an argument ensued between him and the guard.

Police said Fazil left and later returned with a cutlass, brandishing it at the security guard. The security guard told police that after he saw Fazil with the cutlass, he pulled out his handgun and shot him to leg.

Fazil was picked up and rushed to Leonora Cottage Hospital. He was later transferred to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where he is admitted in a stable condition.
