Kevin Mohan, called ‘Chucky’, was on Thursday sentenced to life imprisonment with the possibility of parole after serving 30 years for the murder of his 47-year-old aunt in 2016.

Mohan, 27, formerly of Fifth Street, Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara, was sentenced by Justice Sandil Kissoon at the Demerara High Court.

Earlier this month, a jury convicted Mohan of the September 4, 2016 murder of Anita Mohan during a robbery at her Cummings Lodge home. He was represented by attorney Damian DaSilva, while prosecutors Taneisha Saygon, Lisa Cave and Muntaz Ali represented the State.

In his probation report, which was read in court on Thursday by a probation officer, it was disclosed that Mohan was raised by his aunt after his mother died when he was a baby.

It was also disclosed that Mohan never attended school and suffered from illiteracy. According to the probation report, residents described him as “hasty” and “rogue” since he would become abusive especially when he imbibes.

But the convict maintained his innocence and told the court that he did not get a fair trial.

In his sentencing remarks, Justice Kissoon said that the victim raised Mohan from a baby to adulthood but he rewarded her with a “gruesome, brutal and heinous” death.

Justice Kissoon said that he found no mitigating factors in favour of Mohan and took into consideration that a life was lost and so there is the need to send a strong message to deter like-minded potential offenders.

Mohan was first tried for the capital offence in March before Justice Navindra Kissoon, however, the jury failed to reach a verdict which resulted in a retrial.

According to reports, Anita Mohan was found dead by her son Imtiaz Khan; her body was lying in a pool of blood in her kitchen with her head bashed in and a stab wound to her chest.

A bloody rolling pin along with a broken beer bottle was found near the body.

Kevin Mohan was arrested by police and allegedly confessed to the murder and told police that he committed the crime with the help of an accomplice.

A post mortem examination performed on the woman’s remains revealed that she died from multiple injuries.
