The Ministry of Housing and Water received a total of 11, 900 new applications for house lots between the period of August 2020 to August 2021.

Minister within the Ministry of Housing and Water Susan Rodrigues, during an event on Friday at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre said young people between the ages 21 to 31 account for more than 9,000 of the new applications.

For the year thus far, 6,500 persons were allocated a house lot with some 7,000 more to receive a house lot by the end of 2021. Minister Rodrigues said this is in keeping with the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) mandate to deliver 50,000 house lots in its first term.

The minister further explained that as the country is on a transformational path, it is only right that citizens equally benefit and improve their lives.

“…and that is why we have an aggressive housing drive in all regions, this is going on across the country,” the minister said.

The government recently started construction of young professional houses in Amelia’s Ward in Linden, Region Ten; construction is also ongoing for young professional houses and low-income homes at East Bank Demerara and moderate-income homes at Cummings Lodge on the East Coast of Demerara.

Minister Rodrigues further stated that the government wants to ensure that every Guyanese has a roof over their head. She promised that by the end of the government’s first term in office, there will be no squatting.

“Enough lands will be made available to every single Guyanese who is entitled to a portion of land so that they can have dignity so that they can have security over their heads knowing that their roof is their own,” Minister Rodrigues said.
