A hire car driver and two passengers are lucky to be alive after an intoxicated driver crashed head-on into their vehicle on the Rose Hall, East Canje Public Road on Wednesday.

A report from Police Headquarters stated that at around 15:30hrs, the taxi driver, 55-year-old Chaatram Sukhu of West Canefield East Canje was proceeding north in HB 6439 on the western side of the public road with passengers – 34-year-old Angela Fraser and 49-year-old Drupwattie Samaroo.

Police said the other driver, 32-year-old Chetram Karan of Reliance Settlement, East Canje was proceeding in the opposite direction in PZZ 1423, allegedly at a fast rate when he swerved into the path of the hire car and collided head-on.

The occupants of the hire car were assisted by public-spirited citizens and taken to the New Amsterdam Hospital for treatment. While the passengers were sent away, Sukhu was admitted for observation, suffering from chest pains.

His condition is regarded as stable. Karan, however, did not suffer any injuries and was arrested and taken to Central Police Station.

Police said that a breathalyzer test was conducted on him and read .138 and .162 micrograms respectively. Investigations are ongoing.
