A 26-year-old Linden resident was on Friday remanded to prison for a drive-by shooting that killed 23-year-old Delroy McKenzie in July.
Samorea Mitchell called “Pastor”, who was recently arrested after being on the run from the police appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before Chief Magistrate (ag) Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus.
Mitchell was not required to plead to the capital offence which alleged that on July 17, 2021, at Sunflower Street, Wismar in Linden, he murdered McKenzie.
He was represented by attorney-at-law Dexter Todd who told the court that his client denies committing the crime and was only charged by the police because he did not want to say who the real killers are.
The Magistrate remanded Mitchell to prison until October 8.
McKenzie, of Roxanne Burnham Gardens, Georgetown was gunned down on July 17, 2021 at around 21:50hrs.
During the shooting, his friend, Calvin Daly received two gunshot wounds to the left and right lower arm with abrasions to both arms.
According to a police report, Daly said that he accompanied McKenzie to Linden to visit a female friend.
At around 21:00 hrs, the two men arrived in Linden and stopped to purchase food at Church’s. Thereafter, it was reported that McKenzie was given directions by his female friend to travel by boat to get to his destination. When he arrived at the Mackenzie shore, he was told to walk through Sunflower Street.
The friend claimed that the female called McKenzie again and told him to turn around since she will send a silver wagon to pick them up.
They then walked out of the street where the said silver wagon car turned around and as McKenzie approached the car to open the back door, a male of African descent opened the door first and started to shoot at him while another male came out of the front passenger seat and opened fire too.
The friend – Daly – ran for cover leaving McKenzie behind. Police said the car had three male occupants at the time. The shooters escaped in a southern direction towards Silver City street.
According to the police report, Daly claimed that he doesn’t know anything about the female that McKenzie took him to Linden to meet.
McKenzie was shot nine times, according to the autopsy.
A later police report stated that a silver-grey Fielder Wagon was discovered torched at Blue Lake, Linden, and police suspect it was the vehicle used in the execution of McKenzie.
