September’s death toll moves to 58 in 12 days; 194 new infections

Nine people have died from COVID-19 on September 11 and 12, taking this month’s death toll to 58 thus far while the overall number of deaths recorded since March last year has increased to 683.

The latest fatalities according to the Ministry of Health are:

  1. A 69-year-old man from Region Four (Demerara- Mahaica) who died on September 11
  2. A 54-year-old woman from Region Four who died on September 12
  3. A 66-year-old man from Region Four who died on September 11
  4. A 78-year-old woman from Region Four who died on September 12
  5. A 42-year-old woman from Region Six (East Berbice- Corentyne) who died on September 12
  6. A 62-year-old woman from Region Four who died on September 11
  7. A 85-year old man from Region Six who died on September 12
  8. A 62-year-old woman from Region Four who died on September 11
  9. A 67-year-old man from Region 10 (Upper Demerara- Berbice) who died on September 11

It was explained that the people were admitted as patients with COVID-19 like symptoms but died while receiving care at the ministry’s medical institutions. The samples were taken at the time of their admission and subsequently returned as positive tests.

Meanwhile, another 194 people were infected with the novel coronavirus over a 24-hour period. This means that there have now been 27,976 infections since March 2020.

These new infections were recorded in: Region One (one new case), Region Two (five cases), Region Three (42 cases), Region Four (109 cases), Region Five (24 cases), Region Six (two cases), Region Seven (seven cases) and Region 10 (four cases).

There are now 29 patients receiving critical care in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit (ICU); 149 people are in institutional isolation, 2,959 people are in home isolation and 15 are in institutional quarantine.

Importantly, a total of 24, 156 people have recovered to date after they were COVID-19.
