With a total of 129 persons currently hospitalised with COVID-19 across the country, many requiring oxygen, attention is being paid to 15 pregnant women who have contracted the virus and are among that lot.

On Monday, Minister of Health Dr. Frank Anthony said there are nine maternal COVID-19 cases at the Georgetown Public Hospital and an additional six at the ‘COVID hospital’ at Liliendaal, Greater Georgetown.

There are a total of 92 persons currently at the facility with 29 in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Dr. Anthony has assured that the facility – Infectious Diseases Hospital – has a full complement of doctors, nursing staff and medical personnel to cater to those persons hospitalised.

“Sometimes, we find that mothers who are ready to give birth also test positive, so we have to take extra precautions to ensure that they are okay and also to reduce spread among the (staff) and other patients within the ward,” the Minister had said in a previous update.

Dr. Anthony also said that pregnant women and women who are breastfeeding can take their COVID-19 vaccines. He also assured those women that there would be no adverse outcomes if they become vaccinated.

He, however, advised them to contact their obstetrician if they have any questions or concerns.

Already, more than 50 per cent of Guyana’s targeted adult population have received the first dose of their COVID-19 vaccines.
