Over 3,000 active COVID cases; more than 1,000 in Reg. 4

As Guyana battles a third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, infections continue to rise with a total of 3, 092 active COVID-19 cases reported across the ten Administrative Regions. Within the last 24 hours, 135 new infections were recorded from 1, 158 tests.

Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica), the largest populated region, has the highest number of active cases with 1, 730 cases. The data was provided by the Minister of Health Dr Frank Anthony on Tuesday during his daily COVID update.

Dr Anthony said of the over 3,000 active cases, 139 are hospitalised at the West Demerara Regional Hospital, the Mahaicony Hospital, New Amsterdam Hospital, Bartica and Wismar Hospitals with the majority -104 patients- at the Infectious Diseases Hospital at Liliendaal.

Of those patients at the Infectious Diseases Hospital, 31 are receiving care in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

“In every region, we have seen an increase in cases,” Dr Anthony stated.

The breakdown of cases in Region Four shows 430 cases along the East Bank of Demerara with hotspots including Diamond, Timehri and Eccles. On the East Coast, there are 588 cases with areas of concern such as Mon Repos and Enterprise.

Georgetown has 682 active cases with the highest number recorded in Kitty, Lodge and Sophia.

Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara) continues to remain a concern for the ministry with 61 cases in Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo alone. There are 91 cases in Region Five (Mahaica- Berbice), Region Six had 82 cases and Region Seven 65 cases with 59 in Bartica alone.

Meanwhile, since March 2020 Guyana recorded 687 COVID deaths.
