The Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) will host its Youth and Junior Championship on September 25-26 at the National Track and Field Centre, Leonora.

According to AAG President, Aubrey Hutson, the event will also be used as another opportunity to select Guyana’s team for the South American Under-23 Championship, which will be staged next month in Ecuador.

“We have the Youth and Junior championship and primarily the majority of our athletes competing at Under-23 are of that age group.”

Hutson added, “However, we are still going to look back at our results and try to do invitational events for the Under-23 athletes to come and have another opportunity to compete to see if they can make that South American team, so once they get to Ecuador, they have a bigger stage to see if they can make the team to Pan Am.”

The South America event was initially set to be held in Guyana next month, but was forced to move for a number of reasons. It is now scheduled for October 9-10.

The South American Under-23 is the gateway for qualification to the Junior Pan-American Games in November.
