Eagles pip Achievers in five-setter in Game One of DVA League final

Eagles Volleyball Club took a crucial 1-0 lead in the three-match series against Young Achievers on Tuesday evening, when Game One of the Demerara Volleyball Association’s League final was contested at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, Homestretch Avenue, Georgetown.

Eagles secured a hard-fought 3-2 victory that has put them in a prime position to lift the trophy.

Young Achievers took a 25-17 success in the opening set, before Eagles stormed back in emphatic fashion, levelling the scores with a 25-18 victory and then surging ahead with a 25-16 scoreline in the third set.

Young Achievers then levelled the scores with a 25-22 win in the fourth set, to force a fifth and deciding set. Eagles then closed out the game with a 15-7 win the final set.

Eagles trio Quacy Matheson (17 points), Trevon McRae (13) and Adriel Moore (10) were the leading scorers on the night.

The second game of the finals is scheduled for Friday (September 17), and if needs be, a game three will be hosted on September 21. All games are being played at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, Homestretch Avenue, Georgetown.

Achievers and Eagles earned the right to contest the final, after Achievers finished top of the League with 14 points, three more than second placed Eagles. The other team in the League- Castrol Strikers- finished in the cellar position on five points.
