(Statement by the European Union on the occasion of International Day of Democracy 2021)
In commemorating International Day of Democracy on September 15, Ambassador of the European Union to Guyana, Dr. Fernando Ponz Cantó, has reaffirmed the EU’s continued commitment to being a steadfast and outspoken supporter of democracy, human rights and the rule of law.
He further highlighted that, ‘free and fair elections, rule of law, good governance, human rights and media freedom are building blocks to create a space where every citizen feels free and empowered.’
The European Union is fully committed to support healthier, stronger and more equal societies for all, where everyone is included, respected, protected and empowered.
Ambassador Ponz Cantó stressed that the EU will continue supporting efforts by Guyana, Suriname and other international partners, towards consolidating and further developing democratic values, institutions and processes.
