Elderly woman crushed to death while crossing Eccles public road

An accident on the Eccles Public Road, East Bank Demerara (EBD) on Saturday morning resulted in the death of 77-year-old Jasodra Samwaru of Grove Squatting area, EBD.

According to a police report, Samwaru was crossing the road from east to west when a truck (GVV 1309) collided with her and crushed her to death at around 10:00hrs.

At the time of the accident, the truck was stationary on the western drive lane of the eastern carriageway as the driver heeded the traffic light which was on red. The driver, identified as 36-year-old Anand Ugraj of Foulis, East Coast Demerara, drove off when the light turned green and his left side front collided with the elderly woman.

She was later pronounced dead by a doctor of the Emergency Medical Service unit at the scene of the accident. The elderly woman was then picked up by staffers of the Carmen Funeral Home; her body now lies there awaiting a post mortem examination.

A breathalyzer test was conducted on the driver and no trace of alcohol was found. He remains in custody and a notice of intended prosecution was served on him as the investigation continues.
