Husband, wife chopped, beaten by bandits in Berbice
A 58-year-old man and his 68-year-old wife are nursing injuries after they were attacked and robbed by two masked men who were armed with a shotgun and cutlass at their Warren Village #19 Corentyne, Berbice house on Sunday evening.
Police Headquarters revealed that the couple was relaxing in a hammock under the house at around 18:30hrs; the husband went to the gate to call out to his brother when he was suddenly confronted by the two bandits.
The bandit who was armed with the cutlass chopped him to his upper left hand and the victim then held on to the cutlass which also caused him to receive a wound to the left palm of his hand.
Police said the husband shouted for help from his neighbours but the bandits quickly pulled him into the house and began to beat him. The other bandit with the gun then pushed the wife to the ground as they demanded cash and jewellery.
They stole a Samsung Galaxy cellphone valued at $40,000; two gold earrings valued at $20,000; a gold bangle valued at $80,000 and another cell phone valued at $50,000.
According to the police, as the bandits escape on foot, a loud explosion was heard which was suspected to be a gunshot.
