A 21-year-old Guyhoc Park resident was on Monday released on $300,000 on two armed robbery charges, including the recent knifepoint robbery committed on an off-duty police officer.

Shamar Davis appeared before City Magistrate Dylon Bess and denied that on September 24, 2021, at Water Street, Georgetown, he robbed Police Officer Rohan Persaud of an $8,000 haversack with two cellphones, valued $62,000.

Davis was also slapped with another charge which alleged that on May 10, 2021, at Croal Street, Georgetown, he robbed Stephan Muniram of a cellphone valued $125,000. He denied committing this offence.

Davis told the court that he sells beverages at the Sophia minibus park.

Police Prosecutor Delon Sullivan objected to Davis being released on bail on the grounds that the accused has similar pending matters before the court.

Sullivan also told the court that Davis was convicted in 2016 for a similar offence.

However, Magistrate Bess released Davis on $150,000 bail on each charge. The case is adjourned until October 4.

On September 24, Officer Persaud was walking on Water Street at around 06:45hrs when he was allegedly attacked by Davis from behind with a knife.

The two began to scuffle before falling to the ground during which Davis cut the cop’s haversack from his back and escaped. Davis was later arrested by the police and taken into custody.

    He was subsequently charged.
