Thief caught after breaking into mason’s house

A 33-year-old mason of Tuschen New Housing Scheme, East Bank Essequibo managed to apprehend a thief who broke into his house in the wee hours of Sunday.

Police Headquarters reported that the incident occurred between 00:30hrs and 04:00hrs. The suspect, a 23-year-old man, attempted to steal an electric saw valued at $30,000, an angle grinder valued at $10,000, an electric drill valued at $9,000 and a haversack valued at $2, 500.

According to the report, the mason woke up about at 04:00hrs and saw the suspect in a bending position holding his haversack.

Police said the mason rushed towards the suspect who ran out of the house but the mason managed to grab him and a scuffle ensued.

“The victim grabbed a nearby wire and dealt the suspect several lashes about his body causing him to jump into the drain,” police reported.

An alarm was raised and neighbours came to assist the mason and captured the suspect. Police were then contacted and the suspect was arrested with the items.

Police said the suspect was taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital where he was treated for injuries and later taken to the Leonora Police Station and placed into custody.
