Two men appeared before Magistrate Christel Lambert at the Suddie Magistrate’s Court on Friday charged with the assault of a 25-year-old minibus driver whom they abducted and beat earlier this week.

Stephen Atkinson, 37, and his 18-year-old son Jayson were not required to enter a plea to the charge which alleged that on September 27, they unlawfully assaulted Imran Khan, known as ‘Panko’ of Essequibo Coast.

They were remanded to prison until October 13, 2021, and will appear at the Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court.

Khan was severely beaten on Monday night over allegations that he was having a relationship with a female relative of the suspects.

Khan was attacked at his Essequibo Coast house at about 19:30hrs on Monday by two men; he said they tied him up, forced him into the trunk of a car, and took him to Essequibo Technical Institute Road where he was severely beaten and left to die. Khan was rescued by a passerby who took him to the hospital and the Anna Regina Police Station. He later took investigators to the scene where he was beaten.

Police subsequently found a white Spacio car that was involved in the abduction along with a cutlass, belt, and gun.
