Girl, 9, dies in East Bank Berbice accident

A nine-year-old girl who was crossing the Islington Public Road on the East Bank of Berbice (EBB) died on Friday morning after she was struck down by a car.

Dead is Carleisa Lewis, a student of the Overwinning Primary School; the 32-year-old driver of Glasgow Village, EBB, has since been arrested.

The News Room understands that motorcar PJJ 2394 was proceeding north along the western drive lane of the road when the child ran from east to west and into the path of the vehicle.

The child was picked up by her sister in an unconscious state and taken to the New Amsterdam Hospital by the driver where she was pronounced dead.

The accident occurred at about 09:00hrs; no alcohol was detected on the driver’s breath.
