Efforts are being made to reroute calls to the 911 emergency call system after the fire at the Brickdam Police station in Georgetown would have affected the operations room that deals with the call system.

Minutes after firefighters were able to control the blaze at the police station, which serves as the divisional headquarters, Minister of Home Affairs Roberson Benn told reporters that an IT specialist was working to ensure that calls to the police could be rerouted.

The 911 number serves as the main emergency number for police in Guyana. The operations room of the Brickdam police station manages this number as well as the 227-1611, 227-1149, 227-1270, 225-6940-3 numbers.

Through these numbers, police are able to manage reports and coordinate with patrols to respond to the needs of callers. That means, officers here are tasked with answering calls coming from all parts of the country.

It has been reported that they also have to monitor radio transmission coming through the police radio network.
