A 30-year-old porter, Dayonand Chandraban called ‘Rasheed’, of Number 65 Village, Corentyne, Berbice, died after he reportedly fell from the tray of a lorry on Monday.

The accident occurred at about 12:35hrs along the Number 65 Village Public Road, Police Headquarters reported.

According to the report, the driver, Ron Singh, 27, claimed he was proceeding south along the eastern road way at 50 Kmph when he heard a loud noise and discovered Chandraban had fallen and was laying motionless on the road.

Police said Chandraban was standing in the tray of the vehicle, which was transporting zinc, cement and other materials.

Singh said he immediately stopped the vehicle and assisted in picking up Chandraban and taking him to the Skeldon Public Hospital; he was subsequently transferred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital where he died while receiving treatment.

Police further reported that a breathalyser test conducted on Singh showed no presence of alcohol.

He is presently in custody assisting with the investigation.
