Tragedy struck in Eversham Village, Corentyne in Region Six when a 57-year-old labourer ventured into the back-dam with some farmers and was attacked by a swarm of bees.
Dead is John Sutherland, an amputee also of Eversham Village. The News Room was informed that Sutherland left home to accompany Bryan Bagot of Philippi Farm, Corentyne and Suresh Binda of Alness Village to the Eversham backdam to “show them the rice field” that had to be ploughed.
According to the police, Binda disclosed that he was sitting with Sutherland on the tractor fender while the driver was ploughing the rice field, however, while doing so, the driver suddenly stopped the tractor and shouted ‘bee!’
Binda told the police they all made a run for it but Sutherland was left behind because he could not run. Binda said he too was stung by several bees and when they returned to the scene, they found Sutherland lying motionless on the ground with several stings about his body.
They removed the body using the tractor; Sutherland was later taken to the Skeldon Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Binda is presently receiving treatment at the Port Mourant Hospital. Police said no foul play has been suspected but investigations are ongoing.
