Chinese miner feared dead in Essequibo River

A search has been launched for 57-year-old Sude Tui, a Chinese miner who reportedly went under while swimming in the Essequibo River on Wednesday.

Sude is employed with the Huixin Mining Company at Buck Hall, Essequibo River. Police said the incident occurred at Trail Boss Landing sometime between 15:00hrs and 15:30hrs.

According to reports, Sude and one of his friends went to take a bath in the river; they were wearing life jackets and about five minutes later, Sude and the friend came out of the water and took off their life jackets, and went back to swim.

Persons then saw Sude and the friend struggling in the water.

“One of the persons who was standing on the landing jumped into the river and managed to save one but Sude Tui went down under the water and never came up,” the police reported.
