Grove resident, 34, killed by police during shootout
A 34-year-old man of Golden Grove, East Bank Demerara, who police say was a ‘known character’ was shot dead by police ranks early Monday.
Dead is Kevin Andries. Police Headquarters reported that Andries was killed during a shootout with police and his alleged accomplice.
According to the police report, at about 02:50hrs, ranks on patrol on the East Bank of Demerara responded to a report that Andries and the other suspect, who were in motor vehicle PVV 5380, had reportedly stolen some items.
The vehicle was subsequently seen in the Diamond area and was pursued by the ranks.
Police said the suspects sped away into an access street in Golden Grove; the two men then exited and one of them started shooting at the ranks.
As a result, the ranks returned fire and Andries was shot. The other suspect managed to escape and it is unclear if he was also injured.
Andries was taken to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre where he died while receiving medical treatment.
A .32 spent shell was recovered from the scene, while the motor vehicle has been taken into police custody.
When contacted by the News Room, Public Relations Officer of the Guyana Police Force Stan Gouveia said that information was ‘being compiled’ on Andries.
Additionally, when questioned by the News Room on whether any stolen items were recovered from the vehicle, Gouveia stated that ‘a police statement would be provided’.
Meanwhile, residents of Golden Grove attempted to block the main road following the death of Andries.
However, the News Room understands that ranks were able to clear the roadway.
