Police have taken into custody a 53-year-old Field Officer attached to the Guyana Agricultural General Worker Union (GAWU) and Councilor for allegedly assaulting the Mayor of Rose Hall Town, Dave Budhu.

According to the police report, on Sunday, Budhu was at the Hampshire Civic Clinic Center attending a meeting with Minister of Local Government, Nigel Dharamlall, and various Councillors from the Kilcoy, Hampshire and Rose Hall Town Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) discussing drainage and irrigation.

That meeting concluded around 11:30hrs.

Police said after the meeting the Mayor and the suspect were in Civic Clinic Centre compound when a heated argument erupted over the cleaning of Williamsburg Street, Corentyne, Berbice.

“The suspect became annoyed and started to abuse the Mayor calling him a waste man and dealt him a cuff behind his neck,” the police report said.

The matter was reported at Rose Hall Town Police Outpost and the victim was escorted to the Port Mourant Hospital where he was treated and sent away.

The suspect was arrested and place into custody awaiting charges.

This is the second attack on the Rose Hall Town Mayor thus far.

In September, a 55-year-old man was arrested after he allegedly abused and threatened to kill Budhu.

The incident occurred at Republic Arch Road in Rose Hall; the Mayor alleged that while offloading tools from a truck along with the Town Clerk, Natasha Griffith and other staff, the suspect approached him on a bicycle and started to abuse him.

The Mayor said that the suspect then pulled out a knife from his waist and threatened to kill him.

According to the police report, the Mayor was fearful for his life and ran to safety in the market where he summoned the police.
