According to police reports, the driver and two passengers were imbibing alcohol at a friend’s house earlier Saturday night. After leaving the house, Dass was speeding south along the eastern side of the Mahaicony Branch Road.

Police said he failed to negotiate a sharp left turn and drove straight into the canal which is situated on the southern side of the road. The vehicle reportedly flipped over and was submerged in the canal, which is approximately 65 feet wide and about 20 feet deep.

The vehicle partially submerged in the canal

Twenty-seven-year-old labourer of Mahaicony Branch Road Vishan Motie, who was the other passenger and was seated in the front passenger seat, managed to exit the vehicle. Dass and Singh were, however, trapped.

Later, the two men were taken out of the vehicle in an unconscious state by public spirited people and rushed to the Mahaicony Public Hospital. They were seen and examined by a doctor on duty who pronounced both of them dead.

The bodies have been taken to the Mahaicony Public Hospital’s mortuary awaiting an autopsy.
