Two drivers die in Liliendaal smash-up; two others critically injured

Two of the drivers involved in a three-vehicle smash-up that occurred on the Liliendaal Railway Embankment, Georgetown have been confirmed dead while the other driver and a passenger are critically injured.

Dead: Devaskar Jetoo

Dead are Devaskar Jetoo of New Road Vreed-en-Hoop, West Coast Demerara who was driving a silver grey car bearing the number plate HC 6244 and 24-year-old Nazad Ali of  Lot 148 to 150 Atlantic Gardens, East Coast Demerara, who was driving a silver car with the number plate PWW 3133.

According to a police report, the accident occurred at around 22:30 hrs on Saturday. It was reported that Ali was driving his car west along the southern side of the Railway Embankment at a fast rate of speed. It is alleged that he overtook a brown car with the number plate PMM 1176 that was driven by 45-year-old Petal Northe of East La Penitence, Georgetown.

While overtaking that car, however, Ali’s vehicle collided with the right side front fender of Northe’s car. Resultantly, Ali lost control of his vehicle and ended up in the path of Jetoo’s vehicle, which was proceeding east along the same road. Those two vehicles collided and as such, motor car PWW 3133 and the hire car were extensively damaged.

Ali was later pronounced dead at the scene by a doctor and his body was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital’s Mortuary awaiting an autopsy. Jetoo was taken by ambulance to the Georgetown Public Hospital but succumbed to his injuries at about 04:00 hrs on Sunday.

The third driver and a 26-year-old occupant of one of the vehicles, Evana Seejatan of Atlantic Gardens, East Coast Demerara, were admitted to the same hospital with multiple injuries.

Meanwhile, the vehicles involved in the accident have been lodged at Turkeyen Police Station to be examined by a licensing and certifying officer.

Dead: Nazad Ali

Further investigations are in progress.

Note: This story was updated after the Guyana Police Force (GPF) was able to identify that the driver of PWW 3133 was Nazad Ali. Ali was positively identified by his father Mohammed Ali at the Memorial Gardens Mortuary.
