Two robbery accused charged, remanded to prison

Marlon Vossey, 20, and Shaquille McDonald, 21, made their appearance at the Charity Magistrate’s Court on Monday to answer to armed robbery charges and possession of an illegal firearm.

Vossey of No. 5 Village, West Coast Berbice pleaded guilty to the armed robbery and possession of the illegal firearm. He was sentenced to four years imprisonment along with a $100,000 fine.

Meanwhile, McDonald of Independence Boulevard, La Penitence, Georgetown pleaded not guilty and was remanded to prison until November 08, 2021. Both McDonald and Vossey are unemployed.

Their alleged third accomplice is hospitalised after he complained of feeling unwell during his arrest. He is expected to be charged on Wednesday.

The three men are accused of robbing a a 49-year-old man of Good Hope, Essequibo Coast, at gunpoint of $1.5 million and three gold chains valued at $380, 000 on October 15.

Following the robbery, the men attempted to escape in the Supenaam Creek, but was apprehended by public-spirited citizens and later handed over to the police.

Police had reported that the three men – one of whom was armed with a handgun – broke into the man’s house at about 01:30hrs. Police said one of the bandits pointed the gun at the man’s head, while another hit him in the face.

The man, police said, managed to run upstairs and started screaming for help. This resulted in the bandits escaping with the cash and jewellery.

A .38 revolver and a bag containing $224,890 cash was also recovered during the arrest of McDonald and Vossey.

The third suspect was arrested later in the night.
