Man who drove away from police road block caught with 9lbs of ganja
A 34-year-old driver was arrested by police in the wee hours of Friday moments after he drove away from a roadblock at the Berbice River Bridge Public Road.
Police said the incident occurred at around 04:15hrs and some four Kilograms (9 lbs) of ganja were seized.
Police said while the road block exercise was in effect, a dark blue 212 motorcar bearing registration number HB-6999 was about 20 feet heading towards the road block but made a sudden turn and began speeding.
As such, police gave chase and intercepted the driver some 200ft away from the roadblock.
During a search of the trunk, a bulky gray haversack was found in the spare wheel compartment which contained a bulky parcel wrapped with several plastic bags.
The package was opened in the suspect’s presence and contained a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis, the police said.
The suspect was told of the offence, cautioned and arrested, to which he replied: “is me weed and I went going and sell off over the river but I turn back when I see the block.”
The man, his car and the ganja were taken to the Central Police Station.
The suspect remains in custody assisting with the investigation.
