Blairmont estate bond being expanded to the tune of $82M; $32.8M in machinery for Berbice estates

All of the sugar produced by the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) at the Blairmont Estate on the West Coast of Berbice (WCB) is expected to be packaged and stored with the $82 million expansion of the sugar storage bond at the estate.

The contract for this expansion was awarded to Memorex Enterprise and it was signed on Wednesday in the boardroom of the Ministry of Agriculture at Bourda, Georgetown.

According to information provided to members of the media, the estimated annual sugar production is pegged at 23,000 metric tonnes per annum. And as per the new marketing model for sugar produced by GuySuCo, the Blairmont Estate will package all of its annual sugar production.

Minister of Agriculture Zulfikar Mustapha said that is part of efforts to recapitalise GuySuCo and to enhance the corporation’s profitability.

Meanwhile, two other contracts valued at $32.8 million in total were awarded to Farm Supplies Limited for the provision of equipment to GuySuCo. The corporation is expected to receive a motor road grader to help with the maintenance of roads and dams at the Albion, Blairmont and Rose Hall estates in the county of Berbice. This contract costs $19 million.

Additionally, the $13.8 million will be spent to procure a vibratory compactor road roller to maintain the all-weather roads and earthen dams in Berbice.
