Forty-nine-year-old Bertie John Williams died after a mining pit he was working in reportedly caved in on him and other workers.
Police Headquarters in a statement said the incident occurred on Sunday last at about 10:45hrs at the White Hole Backdam, Potaro, Region Eight.
Williams of Essex Street, New Amsterdam, Berbice was working as a pitman when a portion of the pit’s wall caved in and covered him. Police said the other workers managed to escape.
Williams’ body was later discovered and taken to the Mahdia Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Police said the body is at the hospital’s mortuary awaiting an autopsy
