A 27-year-old pedal cyclist who was waiting at the median to cross the Vryheid’s Lust Public Road on the East Coast of Demerara (ECD), died on Monday after he was struck down by motorcar PAB 1884.
Dead is Ramesh Jaikaram of Thyman Street, Better Hope, ECD; the accident occurred at around 22:00hrs.
Police Headquarters reported that the car was being driven by 24-year-old Jermin Ross who claimed that Jaikaram rode into his path.
Ross claimed he was proceeding west along the northern side of the road; he had just crossed a traffic light when he saw Jaikaram at the median waiting to cross with his bicycle. The driver told police that he was about to drive past Jaikaram when he suddenly rode into the path of the car.
Meanwhile, another driver, Jonathan Rasulbaksh, 22, told police he was driving behind when he saw Ross trying to swerve from hitting the cyclist. As result, Jonathan also swerved away from hitting the car.
Jaikaram was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police said both Ross and Jonathan were placed into custody as investigations continue.
A breathalyser test was negative for Ross.
