Two bandits posing as workers from the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) Inc were arrested with the assistance of a Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) officer and citizens on Monday.

Police Headquarters reported that the men attempted to rob a 56-year-old housewife at Covent Garden, East Bank Demerara at about 12:00hrs.

Police said the bandits, aged 25 and 20, approached the woman at her back gate while she was doing laundry and told her they were there to read her GPL metre. The woman told them the metre was located at the front of the house and continued with her laundry.

The woman recalled that she suddenly felt someone grab her and demand that she hand over all of her money; the bandit tried to force her inside the house.

But she started screaming and shouted ‘thief!’, causing the suspects to let go of her and walk out of the yard. After citizens in the area rushed to her aid, the woman pointed out the men who were attempting to escape.

With the quick response by residents with the assistance of the GRA officer and police officers, the 25-year-old suspect was arrested and the 20-year-old was found hiding in the storeroom of an apartment complex in the area.

They were both take to the Golden Grove Police Station and placed into custody pending further investigation.
