Woman, 21, attacked, raped; suspect arrested

A 21-year-old woman remains hospitalised after she was brutally attacked and raped by a man in Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) on Tuesday evening.

Police Headquarters reported that the young woman was walking on the street at around 18:15hrs when the suspect attacked her from behind; he grabbed her by the neck and threw her “into a bushy drain next to the said street and forcibly committed the act.”

The victim resisted and bit the perpetrator and managed to escape.  A report was made to the police and she was escorted to the hospital.

The suspect was subsequently arrested and reportedly admitted to the offence, the police said. He remains in custody pending charges.
