A 31-year-old labourer was on Wednesday sentenced to three years imprisonment for chopping his neighboUr with a cutlass.

Royen Singh of Seaforth Street, Kitty, Georgetown, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court where he admitted that on October 29, at Seaforth Street, he unlawfully and maliciously, inflicted grievous bodily harm to Chris Balkaran.

“Yes, I do it,” the unrepresented man told the court, as he explained that he acted in self-defence.

The court heard that the men share the same yard space and on the day in question, they had a misunderstanding during which Singh armed himself with a cutlass and attacked Balkaran.

Balkaran was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was treated and had to undergo surgery.

According to the prosecutor, Balkaran received a chop to his head, but it is not life-threatening.

However, Balkaran, who was in court, said he sustained several broken fingers and two veins in his left hand were chopped during the attack by Singh.

The Chief Magistrate, after taking the facts into consideration, sentenced Singh to three years imprisonment.
