A 20-year-old convict was recaptured Wednesday morning shortly after he escaped from the Lusignan Prison on the East Coast of Demerara (ECD).

Police Headquarters revealed that Shamar Prince of Amelia’s Ward, Linden, who was serving two five-year sentences for armed robbery, was recaptured in the backlands of Annandale, ECD at around 10:00hrs.

It is alleged that Prince was working on the prison farm when a truck entered the prison compound through the eastern gate; he used the opportunity and bolted through the gates into the backlands.

As a result, an alarm was raised and ranks from the Vigilance Police Station responded and searched the backlands where he was caught.

“He was then told of the offence committed, cautioned, arrested and escorted to the Vigilance Police Station and later handed over to the prison authorities.  Investigations are ongoing.”
