Body of man, 52, found floating two days after reported missing
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of 52-year-old Jamieson De Abreu known as ‘Major’ whose partly mutilated body was found floating in the Berbice River two days after he went missing.
According to a police report, De Abreu was last seen alive by his cousin at a shop in Maria Henrietta, Berbice River, purchasing cigarettes on Monday at around 06:15hrs.
According to the cousin Floyd, De Abreu later left the shop in a dilapidated wooden boat paddling down the Berbice River, which he operated from the bow.
Sometime after, the said boat was observed floating along the Berbice River by residents. An alarm was raised and residents of Maria Henrietta launched a search for De Abreu but it was futile.
On Wednesday, however, at around 08:00hrs, De Abreu’s body was seen floating in the Berbice River facing downwards.
“The body was examined and the face and upper parts of the body appeared to be mutilated from suspected fish bites,” the police report noted.
The body is at the Kwakwani Hospital Mortuary awaiting a post mortem examination.
